Abstract  With the prosperity of new generation of information technologies, smart cities have developed rapidly around the world. Especially in China, as of 2017, more than 500 cities have clearly proposed or are building smart cities. Smart cities have become an important means to promote new urbanization and sustainable development. Based on the analysis of the existing literatures published during the past ten years, we systematically summarize the research progress of smart cities in China. The discussion on the connotation of smart cities has expanded from purely technical elements to the coordination of technologies, economy, society and environment. The evolution of smart cities has gone through different stages such as information cities, digital cities, technology-driven smart cities, and humanities-driven smart city. It will further evolve into a smart society. Regarding to the influencing factors of smart cities, scholars have considered the effects of technologies, capital, talented person, culture, infrastructure, industry, policies, etc. Chinese scholars also have proposed the top-design framework of smart cities with the perspective of technology, urban management, economic development and comprehensive planning. Furthermore, a lot of research has explored the applications and strategies of smart cities. Meanwhile, there are still some shortcomings in current smart city research. On the one hand, in-depth interdisciplinary research is urgently needed. On the other hand, the research on smart cities is not closely integrated with national development strategies. In the future, the innovation research of smart cities should focus on the coordination of urban technology, social culture, economic development, spatial functions, resources and environment, and also focus on the integration of different technologies, methods, and policies.
